I Joined a Way Cool Club.

I am beyond proud to share that I was accepted into the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) as a full juried Signature Member. 🩷

NAWA was founded in 1889 with a sole purpose of supporting and elevating women artists nationally. Their membership past and present is knocked out, and to be included among them is a total honor. I am one of only three Oklahomans on this list and the entire experience has felt really big, And you know when you have something important and exciting, and you want to hold onto the moment? That is totally how I felt about this! I wasn’t quite ready to share until now.

In September, a close new friend encouraged me to apply for Signature Membership in NAWA. Well, something about stars aligning is worth noting because I had just been thinking of ways to show my work outside of Oklahoma. So, I applied. It was a chunky little application process and it gave me a chance (with a big fat deadline for encouragement) to put together pieces that describe me and my current artistic practice. It gave me a chance to dig in to what I have done so far as an artist and see how my path to now has been revealed.

So I wrote things! So many things! I wrote a new Artist Statement, updated my Artist Bio, Exhibition Schedule, CV (to include my new teaching gig, OMG! See next blog for more info on that). On Oct 1, 2024, I was notified that I was accepted as a member.

I hopped on a plane to NYC the day after the Presidential election with a carefully wrapped painting and loads of joy. I took  ‘She, Bright as Yellow” to hang in the show at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park and where I was inducted into NAWA.

I had considered not going. Why? Who knows. But when I mentioned that to Brad he said ‘Anne, you can’t NOT go. This experience only happens once, you have to go’. God, I love that man. So I told my students (again, next blog!) what was happening and their reactions moved me. They were so excited for me! It reminded me that my biggest job on this planet is to be 100% me; because doing that might remind someone else be 100% them. 🩷
